Montpellier, Cheltenham
Cheltenham is a Regency spa town that grew rich quickly in the early nineteenth century and has the streets to prove it. Montpellier is the part where that shows most: stucco terraces, wide pavements, gardens in the middle, and a concentration of bars and restaurants that gives the quarter a life beyond architecture.
Getting around
Cheltenham Spa station is 0.7 miles away — walkable in around fifteen to twenty minutes, or a short taxi. Great Western Railway runs direct services to London Paddington; CrossCountry connects north and south-west. Gloucester is under seven miles, Ashchurch for Tewkesbury just over seven.
By road, the M5 junctions 10 and 11 put Bristol, Birmingham and the South West within reach, and the A40 runs east towards Oxford.

Direct London services vary considerably by time of day, and some routes require a change. Check National Rail for your actual journey rather than a headline figure.
What's around you
Montpellier Gardens sit at the end of the street — a formal park that hosts a good share of the town's outdoor events. The Promenade, with its lime trees and the main shopping run, is a couple of minutes in the other direction. Between them is the Montpellier drinking and dining quarter itself.
Cheltenham's festivals — literature, jazz, science and music — are a large part of the town's calendar and several of them use venues and marquees within a few hundred metres of the flat.
Cheltenham Racecourse, and the Festival in March, is roughly a mile and a half north.

Things people don't mention
- You are above the wine bar. Not near it — above it. The Montpellier Wine Bar occupies the ground floor of Bayshill Lodge, with pavement tables on two elevations. On Friday and Saturday nights, and through festival and race weeks, the street below is busy late. A first-floor flat with sash windows and only partial secondary glazing will hear that. It is the single most important thing to decide about before you view.
- Race week. The Cheltenham Festival transforms the town for four days in March — accommodation, taxis and restaurant tables all become scarce and expensive.
- Period building, period bills. Solid stone walls and sash windows are why the EPC is an E rather than a C. Read the energy section before you budget.
- No lift. First floor, stairs only.
